Sian Ka'an Biosphere
Sian Ka'an (translated from Maya is "Where the sky is born" or "gift from heaven") is located 24 km south of Tulum, was decreed as a nature reserve on 20 January 1986 after being extended in 1994 and 1998, currently covers an area of 650,000 hectares total 10% of the state of Quintana Roo.
The reserve contains all the main ecosystems of Central America and the Caribbean, its flora boasts 800 plant species classified. To date have been recorded 2.161 species of animals, including 339 birds, 103 mammals. The reptiles of the area include white turtle, leatherback, loggerhead and care among others.
Its shores offer 120 km of coral reef, which forms part of the second largest reef system in the world, the Great Mayan Reef. The crystal waters offer incredible formations of 84 types of coral, more than 450 species of colorful fish and countless extraordinary creatures.
Within the limits of the biosphere reserve of Sian Ka'an is Bocapaila, is a peninsula, 20 meters wide, which continues for 25 kmmore to Punta Allen in the Bay of Ascension.
